Rock Ridge High School Performing Arts crowned Virginia Theatre Association State Champions
From October 22-25, Rock Ridge High School’s Theatre Program “Rock Ridge Performing Arts” attended the Virginia Theatre Association’s (VTA) High School Theatre Festival in Norfolk, Virginia. VTA is the largest state theatre association in the country and the central resource for connecting, creating, cultivating and advocating for practitioners of theatre in Virginia.
This year, a talented and competitive field of 54 schools performed in the High School Theatre Festival. These schools, consisting of Performing Arts Magnet Schools, Private Schools and Public Schools all competed for just one spot – First Place and the opportunity to represent Virginia in the South Eastern Theatre Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina.
A first-time competitor in the conference, Rock Ridge Performing Arts emerged as the VTA State Champions for 2015 – 2016 school year for their enthralling performance of their One-Act play, Ernest and the Pale Moon, written by Oliver Lansely and directed by Tony Cimino-Johnson, Rock Ridge HS Drama Teacher and Director.
Mr. Cimino-Johnson commended his cast and crew by saying, “The students had the opportunity to share with the Commonwealth of Virginia their hardwork, dedication, and theatre aesthetic. Our program is more than just a trophy, it’s about creating the next generation of Theatre Artists, supporters and lovers. This weekend helped solidify dreams for our students… the opportunities have just begun.”
Completing an all-round award-winning cast and crew performance, the State Champions also received awards for Best Costumes and Best Technical Merit.
In addition, two students, Lucky Vemuri and Rami Zein, auditioned for several colleges all over the east coast and received offers from multiple colleges totaling more than $170,000 in scholarship monies – a testimony to these students’ talents and the program’s prestige to attract such scholarship offers!
Rock Ridge Performing Arts will present their full version of the State Championship Performance of “Ernest and The Pale Moon”, on December 5th at 7:00 pm with a ticket price of $10 per ticket. Additional donations gladly accepted. All proceeds will go towards offsetting the cost of attending the South Eastern Theatre Conference and the International Thespian National Festival.
